About the Corps & the Intrepid

Intrepid Sailing CorpsThe Intrepid Sailing Corps is a Cleveland-based organization dedicated to aiding the physical and emotional recovery of veterans and their families through sailing experiences. Founded by local Marine combat veteran Matt McKenzie, the program’s mission is to provide veterans with opportunities to engage in sailing, fostering camaraderie, resilience, and healing on the water.

By participating in sailing activities, veterans can experience both physical engagement and emotional relief, contributing to their overall well-being.

The Intrepid is a 44-foot Luders Yawl with a distinguished history rooted in naval training. Constructed for the United States Naval Academy (USNA) in February 1966, she served as a sail training vessel for midshipmen, aimed to instill teamwork, discipline, and seamanship skills among future naval officers. She concluded her service with the USNA in 1983.

Over the years, many of these yawls transitioned from military service to civilian use. The Intrepid, now operated by the Intrepid Sailing Corps, continues this legacy by offering therapeutic sailing experiences to veterans and their families, promoting healing and camaraderie through maritime engagement but after nearly 60 years of service, she is showing her age and is in need of much restoration.

What is Spades?

6 playing cards on a tableSpades is a classic trick-taking card game played in teams of two. Players bid on the number of tricks they expect to win, and spades are always trump. The highest card in the lead suit wins unless a spade is played. Teams earn points based on their bids, with the goal of reaching 500 points first. A game of strategy, teamwork, and skill, spades is perfect for friendly competition!
